Math's teaching career began at age seventeen, and has since acquired drum set students of all ages. He has been playing drums for 27 years, earned a BFA in Jazz Percussion from Northern Illinois University in 2012, and has studied with mentors including Ernie Adams, Steve Houghton, Rodrigo Villanueva, Greg Beyer, Kevin Bobo, Fareed Haque, and more.
A major aspect of Math's teaching style is “Music begat theory.” Connecting musically with people comes first, while theory and history follows. Another key topic is dance. Having been a professional and collegiate-level modern dance accompanist for over a decade, studying how and what makes people move and groove is what it's all about.
His educational program, The Percussive Approach, is made for drummers interested in music production. It has 3 main goals: 1) to spark creativity, growth, and development on the drum set. 2) to discern all aspects within the percussive realm. 3) to show how it all applies to music production and composition.
Topics of study include: listening, energy control, time awareness, traditional and extended percussion techniques, stylistic versatility, improvisation, music-theory, music composition & arranging, sight-reading, drum chart interpretation, creative songwriting, utilizing DAWs, MIDI sequencing, analog recording and more.
The personalized curriculum will guide you down your own path, allowing you to develop your own form of expression.
