Math's teaching career began at age seventeen, and has since acquired drum set students of all ages. He has been playing drums for 27 years, earned a BFA in Jazz Percussion from Northern Illinois University in 2012, and has studied with mentors including Ernie Adams, Steve Houghton, Rodrigo Villanueva, Greg Beyer, Kevin Bobo, Fareed Haque, and more.

A major aspect of Math's teaching style is “Music begat theory.” Connecting musically with people comes first, while theory and history follows. Another key topic is dance. Having been a professional and collegiate-level modern dance accompanist for over a decade, studying how and what makes people move and groove is what it's all about. 

His educational program, The Percussive Approach, is made for drummers interested in music production. It has 3 main goals: 1) to spark creativity, growth, and development on the drum set. 2) to discern all aspects within the percussive realm. 3) to show how it all applies to music production and composition. ​

Topics of study include: listening, energy control, time awareness, traditional and extended percussion techniques, stylistic versatility, improvisation, music-theory, music composition & arranging, sight-reading, drum chart interpretation, creative songwriting, utilizing DAWs, MIDI sequencing, analog recording and more.
