Matthew "Math" Judson is a drummer, songwriter, composer, and educator born in Evanston, Illinois USA.
He's currently in residency at Studio 1916 in Austin recording his next album. He also produces and licenses his own original music, leads his own band, works as a session/touring drummer, and teaches music privately.
He has worked as a drummer with professional performers including Shoshana Bean, Anthony Rapp, Liz Callaway, Jayne Curry, Jesse Hamilton, John Bressler, Aimee Atkinson, and more.

Early career and school:
At age nine, Math built his own tupperware drum set, and would play along with rock and R&B influences. Soon, he was enrolled in piano lessons, and joined the elementary band as a percussionist (eventually owning real drums!). At age fifteen he began playing guitar for fun (his friends would leave them at his house to jam), so he learned to play upside-down, since he plays left-handed. In high school, he began taking private lessons with Phil Beale, who pushed him to develop his drumset chops. Math played in all of the ensembles, attended the Illinois State Competition as an orchestral percussionist, and thanks to his exceptional band director, Reuben Cooper Jr., he was heavily influenced by jazz music and history. He then went on to study drumset with Steve Houghton at Indiana University for one year, and then decided to transfer back to Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, IL where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Jazz Studies/Percussion Performance. During this time he refined his jazz drumming skills, recorded his own compositions, joined Renaissance Sound, and studied with mentors: Ernie Adams, Rodrigo Villanueva, Robert Chappell, Greg Beyer, Mike Mixtacki, Fareed Haque, Art Davis, Kelly Sill, Ed Klonoski, James Phelps, and more.
Matt's teaching career began at age seventeen, and has since acquired drum set students of all ages. A major aspect of his teaching style is “Music begat theory.” Connecting musically with people comes first, while theory and history follows. Matt utilizes his multi-instrumentalism to jam along with students in order for them to get a feel for playing in a live group setting. His in-depth curriculum, The Percussive Approach, sparks growth and development on the drum set while reaching out to all styles and aspects within the percussive realm and music production.
